What Is Mastering?

OK, so you’ve poured your heart and soul into your music.
It deserves that huge sound you’ve been dreaming about.

The Mastering engineers at Rosewood Studios can give your music
the soaring highs and booming lows it needs to compete with Major Label releases.

Before and After Mastering Audio Samples
Song - Garden of my Heart - written by T Bone and Cowboy Surfer originally recorded at another studio and mastered by Stu Shulman at Rosewood Studio.
"Wow! That is a gorgeous song! I loved it! Your guitar work is hypnotic and soothing for me" -Jen in Cam

Notice the change in overall level, crispness of the guitars and strings and smoothing of the vocals through the use of EQ adjustments, compression and dithering. This song really benefits from a good mastering.

Here is another example of how mastering can improve the overall sound quality of a Robert Turner song that was originally recorded at Capitol Records Studio B by Gregory Edenfield, engineer for Stevie Wonder and mastered by Stu Shulman at Rosewood Studio.

Again the overall levels are dramatically increased with
improved clarity and punch of the piano and upright bass.

EVERY Major Label release is Mastered for radio/internet play and for retail/digital sale. The reason for this is that In the studio you record one song at a time resulting in songs that peak at different levels and with different EQs. A mastering engineer can drastically improve the overall sound and quality of your song or album with the skillful use of EQ, gain, reverb and compression to give it a consistent sound from track to track. This process also allows the engineer to pump up the volume of your overall album or individual track so it is as hot as can be and sounds incredible.

A fresh pair of ears can be the difference between a good-sounding CD and a great one. One of the benefits of post production is having an unbiased sound professional evaluate your Master and determine how to get the most out of your production. After all, you've spent weeks maybe even months working in a recording studio listening to your CD over and over again. You only have one chance to make your music sound its best. You owe it to yourself and your music to bring out the best sound you possibly can by Mastering your finished recording.

Some things a Mastering engineer can do to improve your recording

Raise the overall level.
Even out song levels and EQ individual tracks for cohesion.
Correct minor mix deficiencies with equalization.
Enhance flow by changing the space between tracks.
Eliminate noises between tracks.
Make your music sound great on any sound system.
Add CD-Text information (Artist, Title, Track Names, that can be displayed by some CD players)

Making a CD generally involves four steps:

Recording. This is the process of capturing your performance
onto a physical medium like tape or a computer's hard disk.

Mixing. This is the process of blending together multiple recorded tracks
using a mixing console; the usual result is a two-channel, stereo performance.

Mastering. In this phase, your recording is balanced, equalized, sweetened and enhanced so your finished product will have maximized sonic and musical qualities and thus be more competitive in the music marketplace.

Replication. In this final step, your digital audio master is transferred to a glass master for CD production or compressed to a high quality digital file for digital distribution.

If you are not Mastering your recording, you are leaving out what could be a crucial step in the making of your CD or MP3. Your master is the final template in your music production for commercial release. Mastering can make a huge difference and has the biggest impact in the musical value of your product yet it is the least expensive part in the entire workflow of making a CD.
